With great pleasure, turntable gallery, in conjunction with WE1 Heritage, would like to introduce the gallery’s inaugural artist in residence, Sophie Dickinson. Launching her debut with us at the start of November, Sophie’s practice folds in deep observation with a forensic material enquiry, encompassing sculptural creations, ceramics, and found objects in equal measure.
This marks the turntable’s ongoing commitment to nurturing fresh young talent and promoting exciting new opportunities for contemporary artists to thrive and make their voices heard in an award-winning environment.
Investigating the historical, allegorical, and personal use of objects, ‘Whispers of Weight and Wind’ explores humanity’s complex relationship to materiality and the symbolic. The exhibition views our interaction with material things as a subliminal offering, their use and collection providing a sense of control, understanding, and permanence in our ephemeral existence. Sculptural assemblages act as spatial poetry, infused with personal and universal symbolism created from object reductions. These exist as esoteric manifestations of in-betweenness, interwoven with personal narratives of pain and perseverance.
This exhibition is a retrospective of the artist’s past work alongside current works in progress. It also serves as part of her research for an upcoming project yet to be announced. Special thanks to Create NEL for their support in making this exhibition possible.
